چکیده

Synopsis To investigate if motor cortical representation shows plastic change after short-term somatosensory stimulation, the brain activation during the right thumb movement was compared before and after transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) by using fMRI. The activation in the primary motor area (M1) decreased after the intervention with TENS. This reduction lasted for 30 min. The fact that the same motor outputs were achieved by the activation of smaller volume in the M1 suggested that the M1 works more efficiently after peripheral somatosensory stimulation. Short-term somatosensory stimulation may be useful to rehabilitate motor-disabled patients after brain damages.

Does High Frequency Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) Affect EEG Gamma Band Activity?

Background: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a noninvasive, inexpensive and safe analgesic technique used for relieving acute and chronic pain. However, despite all these advantages, there has been very little research into the therapeutic effects of TENS on brain activity. To the best of our knowledge, there is no evidence on the effect of high frequency TENS on the gamma ...

Modulation of Inhibitory Corticospinal Circuits Induced by a Nocebo Procedure in Motor Performance

As recently demonstrated, a placebo procedure in motor performance increases force production and changes the excitability of the corticospinal system, by enhancing the amplitude of the motor evoked potentials (MEP) and reducing the duration of the cortical silent period (CSP). However, it is not clear whether these neurophysiological changes are related to the behavioural outcome (increased fo...

Induction of plasticity in the human motor cortex by paired associative stimulation.

Current models of motor cortical plasticity, developed in studies on experimental animals, emphasize the importance of the conjoint activity of somatosensory afferents and intrinsic motor cortical circuits. The hypothesis that an enduring change in excitability in the cortical output circuitry can be induced in the human motor cortex by a paired-stimulation protocol was tested. Low-frequency me...

Transpinal and Transcortical Stimulation Alter Corticospinal Excitability and Increase Spinal Output

The objective of this study was to assess changes in corticospinal excitability and spinal output following noninvasive transpinal and transcortical stimulation in humans. The size of the motor evoked potentials (MEPs), induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and recorded from the right plantar flexor and extensor muscles, was assessed following transcutaneous electric stimulation of...

Role of sustained excitability of the leg motor cortex after transcranial magnetic stimulation in associative plasticity.

Changes in the strength of corticospinal projections to muscles in the upper and lower limbs are induced in conscious humans after paired associative stimulation (PAS) to the motor cortex. We tested whether an intervention of PAS consisting of 90 low-frequency (0.1-Hz) stimuli to the common peroneal nerve combined with suprathreshold transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) produces specific cha...
